All support visits are designed to strengthen the program, support family literacy, and support professional development at participating sites. Most workshops are offered year-round, with a select few available in the spring only. Please note that read aloud demonstrations may be combined with other trainings by request.

Year-Round Support~ Strengthen and Sustain your RAR Program!

Support for Families

  • Family Introduction Invite RAR staff to help kick off your program. Start a community dialogue with families about the basics of early literacy and language development in their young children, the importance of family book-sharing, and provide an overview of the RAR program. (20-30 min.—may be combined with other trainings).
  • Early Brain Development and Book Sharing with Infants and Toddlers Families will learn about early brain development for children ages birth to three, as well as the importance of book sharing with their very young children. We’ll share, demonstrate, and practice read aloud strategies parents can use at home to support their child’s early learning. (60 - 90 min.)
  • Early Literacy & Interactive Book-Sharing In addition to providing an overview of Early Literacy basics, we will share, demonstrate, and practice simple strategies for engaging children in brain-building book-sharing at home. (60-90 min.)
  • Read Aloud Routines: Exploring Common Challenges RAR staff will facilitate a reflective discussion surrounding common challenges to establishing a daily book-sharing routine, and explore with families ways to overcome those barriers. (60-90 min.)

Support for Educators and Children

  • Raising A Reader Orientation Is the RAR program new to your site or to your staff? If so, this training is the key to learning how to seamlessly integrate the RAR program into your early literacy and family engagement practices. (60-90 min.)
  • Read Aloud Visit RAR staff will provide a lively interactive book-sharing experience (including child participation, song & movement) and reinforce program implementation (including red bag songs and book care). Staff will also check in with educators on program implementation and may provide technical assistance. (30 min.)
  • Interactive Book Sharing and Early Brain Development We’ll discuss current research on early literacy and language development in children 3 to 5 years old, and practice proven strategies for engaging children in brain-building book-sharing in the classroom. (60-90 min.)
  • Interactive Book Sharing and Early Brain Development: Birth to Three We’ll focus on the basics of early literacy and language development in infants and toddlers. We will share, demonstrate, and practice simple strategies for engaging very young children in brain-building book-sharing in the classroom. (60 min.)
  • Refresh and Reflect Have you been implementing the RAR program for a year or more? This is an opportunity to reflect on successes and challenges of past practice and re-energize your approach to the RAR program. (60-90 min.)

Workshops for Families

  • Raising a Dual Language Child: Supporting Emergent Language Based on WestEd’s ELLEY training series, we’ll discuss the ways in which families can support their infants and toddlers that are learning more than one language. We’ll also discuss “frequently asked questions” about dual language development and help parents to discover the myths and truths of multilingualism. (60 -90 min.)

  • Read, Talk, Sing, Play: Nurturing Your Baby’s Brain With Books and Language This workshop combines a skill-building session about language and literacy development with fun, easy activities families and their infants and toddlers can do together. We’ll explore ways that parents can nurture their child’s language development through every day activities. (60 min.)

  • Myths & Truths for Parents of English Learners Based on WestEd’s ELLLEY training series, we’ll share principles, best practices, and resources for supporting English learners’ language & literacy development at home. We’ll talk about social-emotional & brain development and connect everyday activities to literacy skills. We’ll also provide tips to support the home-school connection. (60-90 min.)

 

  • Read, Talk, Sing, Play Combine a skill-building session about language and literacy development with fun, easy activities parents and children do together. We’ll explore what it means to create a talk-rich environment for young children, including meaningful conversations and the home-school connection. (60-90 min.)

 

Workshops for Educators

  • Promoting Emergent Language through Story, Song, and Movement We’ll explore and practice different ways to incorporate movement, song, and storytelling into the book sharing experience. Active learning and movement games can help children, especially English language learners, develop early literacy skills. (60 min.)

 

 

  • Integrating Literacy into Infant and Toddler Daily Routines Educators will explore the benefits, best practices, and resources for creating a language rich environment for very young children. We’ll discuss tips for turning every day classroom routines into meaningful early literacy experiences. (60 min.)

  • Read Aloud Favorites for Infants and Toddlers This workshop focuses on the guidelines and principles for choosing great books for sharing with infants and toddlers. (30 min.)

  • Supporting English Learners through Literacy Based on WestEd’s ELLLEY training series, we’ll share principles, best practices, and resources for supporting English learners’ language & literacy development in the classroom. We’ll also provide tips to support the home-school connection. (60-90 mins.)

 

  • Fostering A Talk-Rich Environment: Books and Beyond In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore the benefits, practices, and resources for creating a language-rich environment for young children, one that is full of meaningful conversation. (60-90 mins.)

 

  • Read Aloud Favorites: Book Selection Principles This mini-workshop offers practical tips for how to choose engaging books for interactive book-sharing with large groups or one on one with a child. (30 mins.)

 

  • Traveling Tales: Key Components of Story Walking Have you heard about story walking and want to know more about how this strategy supports English learners? We will share an overview and offer some practical tips on integrating this practice into your circle time. (60-90 mins.)
